The Rev. Canon Daniel Caballero was born and raised in south Texas. Father Dan studied music in Chicago, trained as a band director, taught instrumental music in Santa Fe, NM, Bisbee, AZ, and Kenosha, WI. In 1983, after 25 years as a teacher, he left to attend Nashotah House seminary where he graduated with an MDiv. in 1986. He was ordained a deacon, May, 1986; a priest, January, 1987. He began his ministry at St. Barnabas’, Richland Center. He was called to Madison as Episcopal City Mission Chaplain where he served as Episcopal Chaplain at UW & Vets Hospital and later as an intentional interim in the area and in developing Hispanic/Latino ministry in the Diocese of Milwaukee. He was Chaplain/Urban Minister for the Episcopal City Mission of Madison from 1988 until March 1999. During this time he initiated Misión San Miguel, a ministry for Latinos in Madison. Fr. Caballero served as dean for the Northwest deanery, on the Diocesan Executive Council, the Diocesan Standing Committee, Racial Justice Commission-West, the Diocesan Hispanic Ministries Commission, the National Commission on Racism, the National Commission on Hispanic Ministries and as interpreter for the House of Bishops and House of Deputies at three General Conventions. He also served as Province V Regional Associate for Hispanic Ministries and as a member and recording secretary for the Hispanic Scholarship Trust Fund. In January of 1999, he was called to serve as Missioner for Hispanic Ministry on the national staff of the Episcopal Church in New York for seven years. Retiring in 2005, he fills in for local Episcopal clergy as needed. At present, Fr. Dan is pleased to serve at St. Francis House – as Interim Chaplain for the UW fall term. He officiates at a 5pm service on Sunday afternoon. An evening meal is offered following the service to which all attending are welcomed giving students and guests an opportunity for food and fellowship. “Theology on the Terrace”, also offered through SFH is planning on meeting at UW Union.
