Our History

Ministry to and for students attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison has been a part of the Episcopal tradition for more than 100 years. In 1917, property was acquired on University Avenue for worship and living quarters for students. Over the past century, countless students have made life at St Francis House a part of their Badger experience.

Furthermore, St Francis House has remained committed to its namesake’s prayer by “sowing peace.” It has opened its doors to the first LGBTQ organization and as a “safe house” during the war protests and campus riots. In 2011, plans were approved to relocate its 1929 house and chapel from 1001 to 1011 University Avenue. While greatly reducing the number of students who could live at the House, the action provided funding to ensure continuation of its ministry. Saint Francis House remains committed to being a safe place for young adults to seek and wrestle with matters of faith, to worship, and to be the love of Christ in the world.

Wherever you are on your faith journey, you are welcome at St. Francis House!
